BioMedNet Reviews closure and replacement service: Frequently Asked Questions for current customers

1. What has happened to BioMedNet Reviews access?

BioMedNet Reviews has now been replaced by a new Elsevier review-content service hosted on ScienceDirect. If you were an existing customer in 2004, you should now be enjoying access to the reviews replacement service on ScienceDirect.

2. What does this new replacement reviews service contain?

  • Full text from all 24 Trends and Current Opinion journals
  • Full text from Drug Discovery Today
  • Full text from each of the following 21 Elsevier review journals in the life sciences

3. Is this new service available to new customers (i.e. those who did not subscribe to BioMedNet Reviews in 2004)?

No. But the individual titles are available via a Sciencedirect license. For more information contact your Elsevier representative or use the details listed below.

4. How does this differ from what was previously on BioMedNet Reviews?

All the Trends and Current Opinion titles are still included in the replacement on SD. These were the best known and most heavily-used journals in BioMedNet Reviews. The replacement also contains all life science review journals from Elsevier and provides around 10,000 more review articles than customers previously received in BioMedNet Reviews.

BioMedNet Reviews did include reviews from some titles that are not review-only journals - e.g. Current Biology. Because the replacement service on ScienceDirect contains review only journals, these review articles are not included in this replacement service, but are still accessible to abstract or pay per view level, or can be added on in the form of a subscription to the journal/s required.

5. Can we still limit our search to review-only content in the ScienceDirect replacement?

Yes. There is a check-box on the standard journals search page in ScienceDirect where you can select 'review articles'. This will produce results from reviews to which you have full text access in the replacement service, plus any other reviews across ScienceDirect.

You can restrict your search to those 46 review journals to which you have full text access by creating a 'favourite journals' list in SD, comprising the 46 journals in the reviews replacement service. For more user information on using the reviews replacement service in ScienceDirect go to http://www.bmn.com/reviewsfaqs.html

6. Will there be any change in the cost of the replacement service?

No. Current customers to BioMedNet Reviews will not be asked to pay any extra for the replacement service in 2004.

In 2005, the replacement offering will still be available for current customers, and the price will continue to be based on the same pricing model, so customers will not experience any inconsistency in pricing. In 2006 customers would discuss selections of review journals with their account manager, based on standard ScienceDirect pricing.
